Melissa’s Tips for Selecting a Baby Nurse or Doula

When interviewing your doula or baby nurse there are a host of questions you should ask. Some are quite obvious like how long have you been doing this? Can I have recommendations? What do you charge? But here are a few key ones that you might not have thought of yet.

5 interview questions you should ask your baby nurse:

    1. What professional certifications do you hold?
The term “Baby Nurse” is actually used rather broadly to describe a person who specializes in caring for newborns. Some may be certified newborn care specialists. Some may have a medical background as a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Others may have no formal training but rely on years of hands on experience.

    2. Have you recently been CPR certified? When?
This should be non-negotiable and certification should be recent.

    3. What are your thoughts on supplementing with formula during breastfeeding?
Even if you don’t know your own beliefs ask this question. Either way you may have an instinct about the baby nurse’s thoughts.

    4. What is your method for getting a baby on a sleep routine?
Setting up routines for a baby is critical — Babies love them! So find out about the baby nurse’s routine.

    5. Tell me about yourself and your family?
Ask about her family and what she likes to do – it’s the best way to get to know a person and see if you are comfortable with her.

5 interview questions you should ask your doula:

    1. What is your philosophy on childbirth?
While it might seem a bit esoteric, most doulas will have one and it might make you realize either you share similar visions and they are a great fit or not.

    2. Are you familiar with my doctor/midwife? Have you ever worked with them before and what was your experience like with this person?
You are creating a support team for you and your partner so it helps to try to create the most peaceful environment possible.

    3. Can you please tell me about the labor techniques you find to be the most successful?
This question can give you a sense as to what to expect from this person (massage, visualization, etc) when it’s “go time” and to see if their methods appeal to you.

    4. How would you involve my partner?
This of course assumes you want your partner involved, and if you do it’s a good question that communicates that it’s important to you. Find out if it’s something the doula’s equally concerned with and if her approach works for you and your partner.

    5. May we meet to discuss our birth plans and are you available to via phone during my pregnancy?
It’s a good idea to make sure she’s accessible and involved. If you have a question during pregnancy you want to be able to reach your doula in a reasonable amount of time.

Also don’t ignore your gut feeling. It’s there for a reason, so follow it! And of course research whomever you are considering. Check certifications and references, and run a background check.
